COMING OF AGE IN THE HIP HOP GENERATION: WARRIOR OF

THE VOID

In telling our stories we seek to stimulate others, especially Blackand Latino males and their fathers to tell their own. "We would defy any reader to demonstrate the ability to resist the impulse to tell their own related stories to anyone nearby while reading the stories contained within these pages. If no one is nearby, the reader would be compelled to find someone as soon as possible.

~ Askia Davis, Sr., Ed.D.

Dad suggests, "Malcom X was a revolutionary and a great spokenword master. The Last Poets and Gil Scott-Heron, who are credited for having planted the seeds for hip hop, drew inspiration from Malcolm X and other revolutionaries who were alsogreat spoken word masters of the 1960s and 1970s, including Martin Luther King, Jr., Muhammad Ali, Stokely Carmichael and H. Rap Brown."

The odyssey from bassinet to college has been an interesting and challenging one, and the challenges continue. One of my toughest obstacles has been defining my own identity through a continuing war with my father. Am I my father's son or my own man? Can I peacefully shape the life I want on my own schedule? It would be great to know the answers as soon as possible.
